Moving “The Idiot” Beyond Dostoyevsky and to the Masses
WCG’s first literary client 25 years ago was Alpha Books, publishers of the Complete Idiot’s Guide series. As the exclusive agency for this line, WCG established a dedicated news bureau that supported five to 15 new titles monthly while actively promoting older titles. The program included the creation of a regular promotional communication outlining current and upcoming titles, the development and management of a social media presence on emerging platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube), national and local media outreach, blogger reviews, contests and giveaways.
WCG garnered between 4,000 and 5,000 unique stories a year on book subjects as diverse as the Kama Sutra, personal finance and nutrition, weddings and world history. WCG amplified traditional media results with an active and integrated social networking campaign that attracted new audiences. This multifaceted strategy sustained the Complete Idiot’s Guide series as a top-of-mind reference for readers everywhere.
The Days of Wine and Olive Oil
With growing medical research supporting the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet for human health and longevity, WCG was excited to promote The Mediterranean Diet Cookbook. During a four-month campaign, the team generated more than 400 stories, including placements in PARADE Magazine and Examiner.com, and positioned the author as an authority on Mediterranean cuisine.
Making Etiquette Accessible
Over the course of WCG’s long relationship with the Complete Idiot’s Guide series, the team worked on five editions of Mary Mitchell’s Etiquette, resulting in thousands of stories with prominent features on the Today Show, CNN, USA Weekend and MSNBC.com. The media attention surrounding the book led to Mitchell becoming a regular columnist at Reuters, a position that she maintains today.
Successful Relationships and Dating in the Pre-Tinder Era
One of WCG’s most robust publicity campaigns for the Complete Idiot’s Guide series promoted Dr. Judy Kuriansky’s complementary books Dating and A Healthy Relationship. The campaign included satellite media tours, ground media tours, press conferences, publication-ready MAT releases and more to promote the author’s advice for a healthy love life. The outcomes included thousands of placements and regular appearances for the author on CNN, The Washington Post, ABC News and Fox News.
Make Way for This Year’s Model
When supermodel and actress Roshumba Williams was looking to expand her expertise beyond the runway through her book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Being a Model, WCG worked in tandem with her agent to promote this resource to the media. WCG generated ongoing media coverage in outlets including New York Magazine, ABC News, Oprah, CNN and Fox Business Hour, establishing Williams as an expert in her field.
